GlobalWebIndex, a consumer research firm, recently released findings on how the restrictions in China’s internet usage have caused difficulties for students, scientists, and businesses.
In the survey the firm conducted, Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are used on a daily basis by as much as 14% of the population, which is around 100 million users.
The survey takers in the science field mentioned their need to use Dropbox and Google Scholar for research sharing and staying in touch with their foreign colleagues. While business owners revealed they use social media sites like Facebook to reach out to old and new customers. Students on other hand used YouTube and other sites for academic research. All these sites are blocked and can only be accessible via VPN.
China has been cracking down on VPN use, especially since their Great Firewall upgrade last year with the goal of creating “healthy development” of China’s internet, reports the local government.
